THE NORWEGIAN NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Ungdomssymfonikerne

Norsk / English

The Norwegian National Youth Orchestra aims to be:

  • a vital and profiled performer of orchestral music
  • a high quality orchestra course of national scope
  • an important recruiting pool for the professional orchestras
  • The Norwegian National Youth Orchestra is known for its high musical quality. The orchestra holds its sessions 3-4 weeks every summer in the small town of Elverum. Three  concert programs involving renowned conductors and soloists are presented every year at the Elverum Music Festival, as well as at other venues in Norway and abroad.

The Orchestra was founded in 1973 by three profiled Norwegian musicians; Leif Jørgensen (former leader of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra), Harry Kvebæk (former solo trumpet of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra), Karsten Andersen (former artistic director of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra).

The objective of the orchestra is, and has always been, to give young and potential professional musicians the possibility to play in a large ensemble and perform symphonic repertoire. Over the years several hundred young people have played in the orchestra, most of them are today members of professional ensembles either in Norway or abroad. The orchestra is credited for having contributed greatly to the quality of Norwegian orchestras.

Approximately 100-110 musicians are accepted every year by audition and by applicaion. Students at music conservatories and academies are qualified to apply. About 10 % of the orchestra are foreign students, mainly from the other Nordic countries.

Recent years the orchestra worked with renowned musicians such as:
